PART 10: Special Issue on LANDSCAPE for Spring 2003

Deadline for all submission for Part 10 materials: December 30, 2002

Dr. Véronique Chagnon-Burke will be the guest editor of the Spring 2003 issue of PART, which will be devoted to the genre of landscape. We seek contributions on landscape painting and landscape photography from any period, including Land Art and Contemporary Art. We will not limit ourselves to consider landscape painting and photography in the West. We particularly welcome papers of an interdisciplinary nature or papers that consider the representation of the relationship between human and nature, dealing with issues such as ecology, tourism, travel, and collecting.

We invite all students, recent graduates, and professionals to submit articles, reviews and practice articles (check submission guidelines to find out what your submission should be in). Hardcopies of the guidelines are available in the student lounge of the Art History Department of the CUNY Graduate Center. Please note: incomplete submissions will be return to the author at the author’s expense. Please review the guidelines and the checklist carefully.

Completed submissions can be left in the PART mailbox in the department lounge (above the students mailboxes to the right of the Student Representatives’ mailboxes). Or you may mail submissions to PART, care of the Art History Department, CUNY Graduate Center, 365 Fifth Avenue, New York, New York, 10016-4309.

PART 11: Call for Papers
ART AFTER DARWIN

In the 120 years since the death of Charles Darwin (1809-1882), the English naturalist’s lasting contribution to our understanding of Nature and of ourselves—natural selection—has been rejoiced and reviled, reformulated by some and rejected outright by others. While the mechanics of evolution by natural selection are far from being wholly understood even today, Darwin’s impact on how the late 19th century saw—and sometimes defended—itself is undeniable. The task remains, however, to fully unveil the visual impact of Darwinism’s renewed construction of self. PART, the online journal of the Art History Department of The Graduate Center of the City University of New York, is planning a special issue devoted to the notion of Art After Darwin, guest edited by Brian Edward Hack.

PART is seeking art historical papers dealing with the late 19th- and early 20th-century visual implications of Darwinism following the publications of On the Origin of Species (1859) and The Descent of Man (1871). Art-related articles on Natural Selection, Genetics and Heredity, Ernst Haeckel’s Monism, Spiritual Darwinism, Rudolf Steiner’s Anthroposophy, Eugenics and Social Darwinism, Non-secular imagery in relation to Darwinism, Organic Architecture, Expressions and Emotion, Degeneration and Regeneration, and any other issues involving art's relationship to the biological sciences of the period are welcome. All students, recent graduates, and professionals of all disciplines are invited to submit articles, reviews, and practice articles (check submission guidelines to find out what your submission should be in).

Submissions for Art After Darwin should be mailed to: Brian Edward Hack, Art Department, Kingsborough Community College, 2001 Oriental Boulevard, Brooklyn, New York, 11235. Deadline for Submissions is March 31, 2003.

Hardcopies of the guidelines are available in the student lounge of the Art History Department of the CUNY Graduate Center or on the PART website. Please note: incomplete submissions will be returned to the author at the author’s expense. Please review the guidelines and the checklist carefully.

Please do not call The Graduate Center Art Department office for information regarding PART. If you have any question about the Art after Darwin issue, please contact Brian Edward Hack directly at bhack@kbcc.cuny.edu. If you have suggestions for PART in general, or would like to get involved and join the PART editorial team, contact the managing editor, Caterina Pierre, at caterina@erols.com.
